Edward Orville Hussey Jr. (“Ed”), age 86, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on May 7, 2017 at home, with his beloved dogs on his lap and his wife at his side. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Catherine Cahalane Hussey, his three sisters Anne Barton, Sue Davis, and Lillian Roberts, his first wife Helen Roberts, their three children Barbara Costelloe, Donna Kitch, and James Hussey, and his three grandchildren Lacey Kitch, Samuel Kitch, and Kristen Costelloe. He will also be missed by his three beloved dogs: Abby, Louie and Murphy.
Ed was born in Gadsden, Alabama, the second child of his parents, Edward and Alice Hussey. He grew up in Talladega, Alabama, and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Auburn University. He married his first wife Helen while still in college; they were together 27 years and had three children. He worked as a Chemical Engineer for Monsanto for 30 years, and lived in Pensacola, Florida; Greenville South Carolina; Westport, Connecticut; St. Louis, Missouri; Weston, Connecticut; and, finally, Marietta, Georgia. He retired in 1985 and spent the next three years traveling the Atlantic and Gulf coast with his second wife Cathy, first on a sailboat, and then on a trawler. During this time he became a Boat Captain and was certified as a Diesel mechanic. After three years of adventures, he came out of retirement to work for ten years with Mohawk Industries as a Quality Control manager.
After his second retirement, he enjoyed home life, nature, and spending time with his beloved dogs. Long an animal lover, his passion was to train, care for, and adopt numerous dogs. As a wildlife enthusiast, he delighted in turning his backyard into a bird sanctuary, where a wide variety of birds came to nest and feed. This passion led to volunteer work tracking bird species for the Audubon Society, and to a part-time retirement job at Birdwatcher’s in Marietta, where he took pleasure in sharing his knowledge about wild birds with his customers, many of whom became friends.
Ed will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband and father, a compassionate and caring friend, and a gentle and benevolent patron of animals and wildlife.
