Glenda Veach Covington of Hiram, Georgia, passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her children, in the home of her daughter Sandra, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. She was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, volunteer, and friend.
Glenda was born in Bradford, Arkansas on August 9, 1935 to Allen Glen and Georgie Moore Veach. She was a Graduate of Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, TN. While working at the VA Hospital after graduation, she met the love of her life, John Mark Covington and married 6 weeks later on August 18, 1956. She had been a resident of Paulding County since 1958 and a member of Dallas First United Methodist Church since 1959. In Dallas, Glenda became very active in the community. She served as Bible School co-coordinator of the Methodist Church, was a Charter Member of Paulding County Jaycettes, Member of Parent Teachers Association, Den Mother for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Member of Dallas Garden Club, Served on the T.B. Association Board of Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Counties, Assisted in organizing and administration of the Polio Vaccine for Paulding County in 1963, Director of Nurses at Medical Arts Hospital, Assistant Director of Nurses at Paulding Memorial Hospital, Organized the First Out Patient Surgery Center at Paulding Memorial Hospital, Served as Diabetic Educator at Paulding Memorial Hospital, Served on the Board of Health Department of Paulding County, Member of Wellstar Paulding County Hospital History Board, Retired from Wellstar Paulding Hospital in 2011 with 30 years of Service and last but not least raised 6 children, helped raise and spoil her 5 grandchildren, Great Grandma to 5 who she loved and spoiled just as much and a Great Great Grandma to one who’s arrival was on the day after her passing. She had a special place in her heart for her grandson Scott’s girls (two of her great granddaughters), Carson and Devin, who lovingly called her “Papa” and brought her much joy in her last years helping to heal her heart after losing her husband in 2020.
She loved to travel and had many adventures with her husband. She was an avid reader, hosted Bridge Club, helped make ‘Grandmother Covington’s” pickles and canned all the vegetables her husband grew each summer. Also, Glenda was a loyal friend to many and in her later years enjoyed meeting “the girls” for lunch. She was a great fan of Georgia Tech, attending football and basketball games for years with her husband. She also planned yearly trips with her daughters and sister to build precious memories. But her favorite past time was always gathering at her home and cooking for her family, she loved her family and they loved her! She was the Sun that her family revolved around.
She was also a tireless caregiver to her husband up until his death on March 23, 2020 and missed him terribly every single day up until her death. Glenda was the epitome of a selfless Christian, wife and mother and lived a life that honored God.
Glenda was predeceased by her loving parents, Allen and Georgie Veach, her devoted husband of 63 years Dr. John Mark Covington, Sr., her brother Perry Veach, sister Margie Ford and son James Allen Covington.
Her survivors include her Children: John “Mark” (Martha) Covington, Jr., Cynthia “Cindy” Covington, Sandra Covington, Diana (Barry) Bickers and David (Pam) Covington, Grandchildren: Laura (Joseph) Robinson, Stephanie (Chase) Diamond, Christopher “Scott” (Dana) Proctor, Taylor Covington Raines, Nicole Covington, Brett (Ashley) Bickers, Bart (Ashley) Bickers, Brittany (Tate) Zachmeyer, Bailey (Jessica) Bickers, Alex Moss and Rachel Moss Great Grandchildren: Savannah (Kyle Barnes) Rhodes, Justin Bickers, Cora Kirby, Parker Bickers, Scarlett Raines, Aspyn Bickers, Stella Rae Bickers, Maverick Bickers, Carson Proctor, Liam Moss, Tyson Zachmeyer, Devin Proctor and a Great, Great Grandbaby, Vianna Rose Barnes, who arrived the day after her passing. She is also survived by her sister Peggy (Kirk) Hardy of Greenbrier, Arkansas and several nephews and nieces from Arkansas and Tennessee.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2025 from 2:00 – 3:00 at Dallas First United Methodist Church, 141 E Memorial Drive, Dallas, GA.
A Celebration of Life service will immediately follow visitation at 3:00pm at the church.
Burial will be private at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia where her remains will be placed with her loving husband.
