Dr. Mary Hood, PhD
Dr. Mary Hood, PhD, age 74, passed away peacefully at her home in Acworth, Georgia, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Mary Ellen Krueger on August 2, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she was the beloved daughter of Gilbert and Esther Krueger.
Mary was a proud graduate of Washington High School in Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin, where she earned her undergraduate degree. Her passion for learning led her to pursue Master’s degrees at the University of Wisconsin and Montevallo University, culminating in a PhD from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Mary’s life was a testament to her love for family, education, and faith. She shared 48 cherished years of marriage with her devoted husband, Roy Hood. Together, they raised five children, who brought her immense pride and joy: Samuel Hood (Houston, TX), Virginia Brewster (Calais, ME), Laura Fuller (Rayne, England), Dan Hood (Fairview, TN), and Steve Hood (Woodstock, GA). She is also survived by her brothers, James Krueger (Sun Prairie, WI) and Ronald Krueger (Sarasota, FL), and three adored grandsons.
A trailblazer in the homeschooling movement, Mary was a sought-after speaker at conferences across the United States, as well as internationally in Africa and Asia. Her deep commitment to education was reflected in her authorship of five books on the subject.
Mary found joy in life’s simple pleasures—hiking along the Appalachian Trail, tending her garden, playing the piano, and immersing herself in her Bible. Her faith and dedication to learning touched countless lives, leaving a legacy of inspiration and encouragement.
Dr. Mary Hood will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her. Her memory will live on through her contributions to education, her unwavering faith, and the love she shared with those around her.
