Betty Gladin

Betty Gladin, 84, died peacefully November 23, 2020 at her home in Roswell.  She was with family and had spent the day reminiscing and laughing.

Born Betty Jo Johnson, March 13, 1936, to Virginia Mae (Bryant) and Albert Norman Johnson in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, she married Harold Gladin in 1956 and they began a family.  She had lost an eye in a childhood accident and it seemed to leave her fearless, limiting her not at all. She enthusiastically tried multiple interests and careers, working with the Better Business Bureau, League of Women Voters, PTA, Cub Scouts, teaching as a substitute and with Head Start and working in a wide variety of sales positions. She was dedicated to her family and a talented cook and seamstress, but her special gift was conversation.  She never met a stranger and made friends effortlessly.

She is survived by her four children and their families: John (Bev) Gladin of Richmond Hill, Georgia,  Jodie (Alan) Sweat of Jasper, Georgia, Celeste (Kirk) Ward of Ellijay, Georgia, Gwyn (Greg) Mathis of McDonough, Georgia, her sister, Kay Crane of Roswell, Georgia, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Albert Johnson of Memphis, Tennessee and Robert Johnson of Canton, Georgia and her beloved husband of 57 years, Harold, who she missed every day.

Due to the pandemic, no memorial service will be held at this time, but individual celebrations of her life would please her very much.  The family hopes to schedule a memorial celebration in the early summer. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to St. Jude Children’s Hospital (stjude.org ) would be appreciated.
