On October 4, 2023, Bonnie Ann Franklin Floyd peacefully passed away at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Kenneth Howard Floyd, her brothers Bill and James Franklin and sister Nell Claire Franklin Moor. Bonnie was born on December 13, 1929 in Marietta, GA to Floyd and Nell Franklin, who owned a pottery business in what then was a largely rural Cobb County countryside. Bonnie loved growing up in the country. She graduated from Marietta High School, later worked in local businesses and enjoyed Southern social life with her family and friends. WW II had ended and fate brought her together with Ken, a handsome young Navy veteran seeking to begin the next chapter of his life. He began studies at Georgia Tech Institute, the two of them began courting which, in turn, led to a marriage proposal and off they went.
The couple, with the blessings of their parents, moved to Peoria, Illinois where Ken took a position with Caterpillar, Inc. Soon thereafter, Bonnie began the dream job that she would love the rest of her life, becoming a mother with the birth of her first child, Walt. A second child, Nancy, was born two years later. Life in Peoria was good for this new family, but the cold, harsh winters compelled them to move back South briefly to Marietta where Ken began a job with Lockheed, before settling on a farm in Cartersville. Soon after, Bonnie's third child was born, a son they named Daniel. She always said she was glad to be a mother and that it was the hardest job in the world, but it gave her great joy. In the midst of her dream job as a mother, Bonnie found time and energy to dive into all sorts of ventures and adventures. She and Ken began raising sheep on the farm and kept the sheep company with chickens, beagles and guinea birds. Several black angus cattle were added to the mix and at some point, the pastures were vacated to make room for the horses they owned and boarded for other horse lovers. The country life Bonnie so loved was now in full swing, yet she still yearned to do more. An unofficial job she relished was that of 'delivery driver', continuously hauling her kids and their network of friends to the lake, the skating rink, the bowling alley, the swimming pool, the movie theater, horse rides, hayrides, Sunday school & church, and a thousand other destinations. Always a 'people person' by nature and a passion to 'volunteer' steered Bonnie to activity in many varied community events and organizations over her years. She became a den mother with the local Brownies and later, the Girl Scouts. Bonnie worked with McDonalds as a STAR, promoting public relations and hosting birthday parties and other events for the company. She displayed her theatrical talents acting in a number of plays with The Dramateurs, a Cartersville theatre group and was a member of The Etowah Creative Arts Council, a local visual arts organization.
Always an advocate for good health, Bonnie created and directed an exercise program for the local Union Carbide plant employees. Her passions were the Magnolia Garden Club, of which she was a past president and member for over 30 years and her membership in the Etowah Valley Historical Society. She served on the Cartersville Public Library Board, actively championing expansion of the library into a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility. Bonnie loved to travel, often with her husband, Ken or daughter Nancy. She has seen Europe, Mexico, parts of South America, most of the USA, the Caribbean islands and the Galapagos. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cartersville. Bonnie is survived by her children, Walt Floyd (Sunny Brown), Nancy Floyd (Ronnie Hall) and Daniel Floyd (Janine Elliott), all of Cartersville. Also surviving are nieces and nephews - Clair and George Crissey, Gilbert Moor, Gregory Moor (Lily WhiteRose), Charlotte Waldrep, Carol and John Haines and Julie Moor. She is survived too, by her sister-in-law, Joan Franklin, Joan's daughters and their husbands - Audrey and Charles Kane and Amelia and Denny McShane.
A Celebration of Life Service for Bonnie will be conducted on Sunday, October 15th at 3 PM from the Sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville with her Pastor, Rev.
