Debbie Holden: September 26, 1954-November 17, 2018
Debra Ann (AKA, Deb, Granny, Ms. Debbie, Mrs. Holden, Lil'Deb, Mom, Grandma) was born to Don and Margaret Lucas, September 26, 1954, on the door mat of the hospital in Zanesville, Ohio. For those that knew Don and Peg she said, "Dam-it Don put down your coat, right here, I'm having this baby." She was the devoted mother of Travis and Margaret, loving spouse of Donnie Dunagan (deceased) and Mike Holden, brother/sister of Donnie, Cathy Maddox, Dicky, Ronnie, Mikey, and Lisa Buchanan. Debbie worked in the record/music industry for 15 years.
At the age of 38, Debbie started at West Georgia College and obtained a Masters Degree in Special Education in 1994. Debbie taught at Anna K. Davie past her diagnosis of stage 3 brain cancer (astrocytoma) from November 2009 until May of 2012 (twenty-twelve as Debbie would say). She was teacher of the year in 1998. Debbie simultaneously fostered children from Murphy Harpst Children’s Center (Brandi, Brandy, Miranda, Jade, Santana, and Caleb). Throughout the years she was an active church member at both Silver Creek United Methodist and Aragon United Methodist Church; teaching children’s church, Sunday school and bible school.
From her initial diagnosis that cold 17th day of November 2009, she faithfully declared her infinite love, devotion and trust for her Lord and Savior. She sought comfort in her belief that God has a plan, that he has everything under control, that it’s all in his hands. Re-occurring notes throughout her daily devotionals revealed a true acceptance of her diagnosis and her future. Her faith was STRONG.
After retirement, Debbie was a full time caregiver for her 2 youngest “grand girls,” world traveler (Kenya, Ireland, Israel, Jerusalem, Croatia, Hungary, Bosnia, Scotland, England), supportive daughter, mother and sister and carrier of the Light of the Lord. Never has there been someone who takes on this horrible diagnosis with the grace, acceptance and courage Debbie did.
