James Gayland Douglas, 70, passed away August 9th, 2019 at home in Kennesaw, Georgia, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born June 29, 1949 in Bakersfield, California to Samuel Earl and Enid Gayle (Baker) Douglas. He attended North High School and married his high school sweetheart, Debra Williams, August 31, 1968. They were married for fifty-one years and blessed with two daughters. Jim was employed by Koch Industries for many years as a plant manager. From 2003 until retirement in 2015, he served as plant manager for Ergon, Incorporated in Waco, Texas. Over the years, due to Jim's work promotions and transfers, the couple lived in five different states. Jim considered himself a paid traveler, as they explored and enjoyed the history and distinctiveness of each new area.
Jim was known for his quick wit, zany antics and incredible sense of humor as well as his warm, generous and welcoming spirit toward family, friends and strangers alike. He loved to tease anyone, anywhere, anytime. He had a strong sense of adventure and provided many fun, unforgettable experiences and memories for his family and others who knew him. In his younger years he liked to travel, camp, hunt and golf. Jim's lifelong dream of owning a mountain cabin near a lake became a reality upon retirement. He loved relaxing at the family cabin in the beautiful North Carolina mountains, boating on Lake Hiawassee, and exploring new places. He also loved spending time with his three grandsons and, while watching them participate in their various sporting events, considered himself their biggest fan.
Jim (known as "J.D." in the workplace) had a strong, loyal work ethic. In addition to providing valuable leadership, he also cared about the personal struggles of his employees and network of colleagues. He was always willing to offer tremendous support and sound advice when needed, and was affectionately referred to as a brother or father figure by many of them.
Jim became a Christian at age 16 and loved the Lord all of his life. He is survived by his devoted wife, Debra; daughters Kristi Ashton (Angie) and Keri Grier (Brandon); grandsons Brendan Ashton, Jon Grier, Nicholas Grier; brother Robert Douglas (Jackie); sisters-in-law Ann Held, Jo Somers, Jean Cox, Judee Johnson; brother-in-law Don Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Earl and Enid Gayle Douglas, and sister, Donna Kay Douglas.
A private memorial for the immediate family is planned. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Georgia Cancer Specialists and a special thank you to Bridgeway Hospice for the compassionate care given to our beloved husband, father and grandfather.
