John Henry Jones, affectionately known as JJ was born September 22nd, 1940 to parents Henry Preston and Annie M. Bradley Jones in Wewahitchka, FL. He left to meet his maker on June 22nd, 2018, peacefully, at his home in Marietta, GA. At a young age, JJ moved to Chicago where he would graduate from Wendell Phillips high school in 1959, achieving 7 varsity letters in various sports. He later met and married his first wife Anne Mitchell and that union blessed them with 4 children. JJ attended the University of Illinois at Navy Pier and afterwards served as an Airman in the US Air Force from 1960 to 1964 spending many years in Anchorage, AK.
JJ began his professional career as a sports writer for the Associated Press and later would spend decades in the fast food industry. While working at KFC, he met the love of his life, Joyce. They married in 1981 and from that union were blessed with one child, Erika. He spent the last 14 years working as a Cobb County bus driver, and though failing in health continued to drive until last year which gave him many great memories. He was a member of Lassister football’s chain gang, and enjoyed puzzles, fishing, bowling, playing cards, fantasy football, and yard work.
Last October his daughter Erika became ill and following her illness JJ became her rock. Before passing, he was able to see her sit on the side of the bed without assistance which was a big blessing and milestone.
JJ was preceded in death by his parents, sibling Lorraine Jones Wallace, children Darrence Anthony “Tony” Jones and Kimberly Jones and grandchild Albert Love Jr. He is survived by wife Joyce, aunt Genice Bradley Gage, sister Anne “Mat” Jones Thompson Hamilton, children Tracey Jones, Kenya Love, Erika Jones and Kris Coleman. He had 15 grandchildren his favorite being Donovan, 8 great grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and his best friend Otto.
