Sybil Peacock Harmon

Sybil Peacock Harmon, 103, Acworth, Georgia, passed away October 14, 2019.

Her ashes will be interred in the garden columbarium at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas, Texas, thus joining her husband Wallace, who passed away in 2001.

Sybil was born in Minden, Louisiana to Walter and Eula Peacock on July 9, 1916. She graduated from Minden High School in 1933 and nursing school in 1937).  She joined Delta Airlines in 1940 as part of its first stewardess class, when all flight attendants had to be registered nurses.

When World War II broke out, she joined the Army Air Corps and was chosen to be on an elite team nursing five-star General Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, leader of both the Army and Air Force, whose heart condition was kept hidden throughout the war years.

After the war, Sybil worked in obstetrics and gynecology in doctor’s offices and later at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. She ended her nursing career as night Supervisor at Baylor.

A master’s bridge player, Sybil loved reading, games and puzzles, travel, and her family. For more than 15 years she joined her travel-agent husband, escorting tours all over the world. In later life, her great passion was genealogy, writing two well-received books on the Wise clan and Harmon lines of South Carolina.

Sybil is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Eula; a sister, Jimmie Davis; a nephew, Roy Davis and husband Wallace.

She is survived by her son, Michael Harmon of Murray Kentucky; daughters Patricia Harmon Albright of Kennesaw, Georgia and Peggy Harmon Sheehan of Chicago; and niece Nancy Davis Murphy of Opelika, Alabama. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Jillian Sheehan Weinell and Lindsey Sheehan, both of Chicago; and great grandchildren Joshua Sheehan and Jason and Janice Weinell.
