In Loving memory of Wilfred (Bill) Frank Broxterman
May 17, 1930 – July 30, 2023
Bill Broxterman, a quiet, confidant man, passed away on July 30, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Baileyville, KS May 17, 1930. He grew up in Seneca, KS. After graduating from Bancroft High school in 1948, he immediately joined the Navy and subsequently served two years in the Korean War.
Bill began his nearly five-decade career in credit unions in 1954 at the Tennessee Credit Union League, where he organized over 75 credit unions in three years. He continued organizing new credit unions on the east coast after joining Credit Union National, now Credit Union National Association (CUNA), in 1957.
After a five-year stint as director of training and education at the Texas Credit Union League, Bill joined the South Carolina Credit Union League as president/CEO. During that time, Bill also served as president of the Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL). Bill was absolutely secure in his ability to lead and empowered those who worked for him.
Bill was recruited by then CUNA President Herb Wegner to manage the Washington, D.C. office of CUNA as Executive Vice President. In that role, he created the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC), the premier political action committee of the credit union system.
In 1974, Bill headed west to become the president/CEO of the California Credit Union League. During his 15-year tenure, he was instrumental in forming WesCorp and the CO-OP Network. Bill also served on the board of the credit union insurance company, CUNA Mutual, now TruStage, for 18 years, two as chairman.
Looking for a new challenge, Bill joined Hughes Aircraft Employees Federal Credit Union as president/CEO for nine years until he retired. In retirement, Bill continued to serve credit unions, stepping in as acting president/CEO for USA FCU and 1st United Services Credit Union.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Bill had his private pilot’s license for over 30 years. He had a passion for family and friends and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and unforgettable stories, songs and a profound influence on those fortunate enough to cross his path.
He is predeceased by his daughter, Deborah Ann Garnett. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Diane, his four children, Wilfred (Rusty) Frank Broxterman Jr., Pamela Broxterman Rush (Jeff), Aimee Katherine Rank (Chris) and Terence Blackwell Broxterman (Mary Beth), along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family asks that donations be made to a Credit Union Educational Fund that was near and dear to his heart, RMJFoundation.org. This foundation provides educational resources for credit unions in California and Nevada.
Rest in peace dear Bill. Your spirit will live in the hearts of those who loved you. You are always and will forever be “A Truthful Feller”.
