Retired Green Beret Maj William (Bill) Erwin Sherman, Jr., passed away peacefully on January 13, surrounded by loved ones, following a brief illness in the hospital. Bill was born in Rome, GA in 1940. Shortly after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Army where he completed his college degree. His 20 years of service included five tours of duty in Vietnam with special forces in the elite U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Studies and Observations Group, or MACV-SOG.
Bill was a dedicated soldier who achieved many accolades, including the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Jump Wings, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Maj Sherman is survived by his wife, Daphne; Son, Wes Sherman and wife, Kelly; daughter, Cyndi (Sherman) Mobley and husband, Randy; daughter, Kymm (Sherman) Lee and husband, Darrell; daughter, Kelly (Sherman) Williby and husband, Brian; his nephew, Todd Corvin and wife Kathi; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, William and Frances Sherman; his younger sister, Anne Sherman Nall; and eldest son, William Mark Sherman and infant son, Gary Todd Sherman.
A service honoring the life of Maj Sherman will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2024, 1:30 PM, at Chattanooga National Cemetery, in Chattanooga, TN.
